On the Monte da Esperança Southeast slope, nearby Serra da Estrela National Park, is Casas da Chandeirinha, a typical mountain villa with magnificent views of the valley. The property has 290 Hectares with 15 Km of private roads, well fitted for walking or BTT. At disposal, on reception, a map with inner roads. On one of the highest points of Serra da Esperança a proto-historical wall can be seen.
On the other slope of Monte da Esperança is a modern Historical Pousada with 24 rooms and a restaurant, rebuilded from a XIII century Franciscan monastery.
The nearest small town, Belmonte, at 4 Km, (where you can find pharmacy, doctor and supermarket) is as ancient as Portugal, with a castle built on the rockiest face of the mount.
On the way out to Belmonte you can find a Roman Villa da Quinta da Fornea that can be seen from the houses.
Leaving Belmonte turning right to Colmeal da Torre is the Centum Cellas, roman archaeological station, an old roman town from the first century AC, where lived a community dedicated to farming and mining . Pedro Alvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil was born in Belmonte.
Within 60 miles there are a lot of ancient castles and historic villages like Sortelha, Castelo Novo, Linhares, Sabugal, Almeida, etc. Covilhã has a modern hospital with a local airport. River beach at 7 Km.
Trout, hare in the rice on iron pot, kid stew or roast kid, grilled dry cod fish are the main traditional dishes.
